Hunting the Cattle-Killing Leopard of the Matobo Hills.

Wayne Grant started professional hunting in 1980 in Zimbabwe and has since plied his trade as far north as Tanzania and all the way south to the Cape. But it is the Matobo Hills [Matopos Hills] in Zimbabwe that holds his fascination because of the spotted denizens that inhabit this rocky area. And what leopards there are in these hills! These monsters are every bit as big as the largest leopards found in East Africa.

Grant’s fascination with these cats began with a “bumbling” attempt at baiting by simply laying still on a large rock thirty yards from the bait with a rifle and a flashlight. According to Grant, the leopard must have been desperate for food to have come to the bait. Slowly Grant started growing wiser and, over the next two decades, learned just about all there is to know about leopards. Today, some say he thinks like one.

This book is very much a single-subject tome: If you want a book with good stories about leopards that kill cattle and maul an occasional human and if you want a book that gives good practical leopard hunting advice in all its details from the composition of the blind to the location of the bait, this is your book. If you want a book with good thrilling leopard narrative, techniques on hunting, and a book by who is essentially a leopard nut, buy this book. Take it in your leopard blind on your next hunt, and in case the cat charges, the book is just hefty enough to whack it over its head and stun it for that one fraction of a second to allow you to make your escape!
