Description

The story of the 19th century Sheffield, England (and American) makers of fine edged weapons and cutlery, including the famed BOWIE KNIFE. During the century between 1825 and 1925 scores of Sheffield cutlers made the world's finest, most effiecient and practical blades, such as the famed Bowie Knife, including California Knives, I Dig Gold From Quartz knives, Arkansas Toothpicks, Buffalo Knives, and during the American Civil War knives marked Death To Traitors, Death To Abolition, Liberty and many more! Often they had highly decorated hilts, gold, silver and jeweled decorations, and ivory, tortoise shell or mother-of-pearl grip scales. The American Frontier era brought large buffalo skinning and similar knives. Finally, in the 1870s the American makers of fine cutlery began appearing on the scene, often equaling the quality and style of those made by the Sheffield cutlers. The book features a Cyclopedia of Makers including names, addresses, working dates and their TRADEMARKS, plus many illustrations of the knives themselves as well as their markings.
