Conceived by Colonel John Thompson in 1919 and intended for the trench warfare of World War I. The Thompson submachine 'Tommy' gun made its iconic mark in Chicago's gangland in the 1920s most notoriously in the hands of Al Capone's mobsters. One of the consequences of this notoriety was a lack of military demand. Also influenced by peace and the Depression so much so that of the first production run 15,000 in 1921 - only two thirds had been sold by the end of 1938.
However, World War II was to change that. By the end of 1940, allied country defence forces had ordered over 110,000. The eventual US Ordinance Department orders of the Thompson machine gun would total 1.5 million.
This book examines the production history, successes and use in combat of the Tommy gun illustrated with over 70 photographs and line drawings.
