Synopsis:
This inexpensive new book explores the Darling story, answering questions that have plagued collectors for generations. 104 pgs.
More Information:
For decades, one of the most tantalizing guns in America has been the Darling Pepperbox. The Darling brothers filed their patent for a revolver mechanism just seven weeks after Colt did. While Colt went on to riches and fame, the Darlings died in poverty, and their unique revolving pepperbox is one of the rarest guns known to collectors. Many have claimed that it was the Darlings, not Colt, who were the real inventors of the revolver, but is this true? This inexpensive new book explores the Darling story, answering questions that have plagued collectors for generations

Variations of Colt's. Breslin, Price, Pirie, Variations of Colt's. Breslin, Price, Pirie,

Heavily illustrated with over 160 photographs and superb technical drawings by Rainer Dethloff. Documented by a decade's worth of research and Colt factory records, including production quantities and extensive serial number data!
Be prepared for some surprises...this field of collecting will be changed forever! This landmark book on Colt's New Model Pocket and Police Revolvers permits the reader to finally understand these interesting and diverse early cartridge pistols. Until now, most authors and collectors have labeled these guns "Small Frame Conversions" and declared them confusing. As it happens, there are seven basic variations which are documented and described with production programs and quantities given for each. As the authors of this book point out, most of these guns were actually made as cartridge pistols and were not converted from percussion, although the conversions form a key part of this book and are described in detail.
The three authors are all long-time Colt collectors and, independently, each has been collecting data for over ten years. Their research permitted them to understand and interpret previously unexamined Colt factory records and to locate key documents in the Connecticut State Library.

The Story of Colt's Revolver: The Biography of Col. Samuel Colt. Edwards. The Story of Colt's Revolver: The Biography of Col. Samuel Colt. Edwards.

Samuel Colt (1814-1862) was an American inventor, industrialist, businessman, and hunter. He initiated Colt's Patent Fire-Arms Manufacturing Company (now Colt's Manufacturing Company) and made the mass production of revolvers viable commercially. Colt's first two business ventures were producing firearms in Paterson, New Jersey and making underwater mines; both ended in disappointment. But his business affairs improved rapidly after 1847, when the Texas Rangers ordered 1,000 revolvers during the American war with Mexico. Later, his firearms were used widely during the settling of the western frontier. Colt died during 1862 as one of the wealthiest men in America. Colt's manufacturing methods were sophisticated for the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. His use of interchangeable parts helped him become one of the first to use the assembly line efficiently. Moreover, his innovative use of art, celebrity endorsements, and corporate gifts to promote his wares made him a pioneer of advertising, product placement, and mass marketing.

Samual Colt: Arms, Art, and Invention. Houze. Samual Colt: Arms, Art, and Invention. Houze.

With essays and entries by Carolyn C. Cooper and Elizabeth Mankin Kornhauser. Published in conjunction with an exhibit organized by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. 260 pages. Large format hardcover book with a dust jacket. 12 1/4" x 10". A beautiful and informative new book on Samuel Colt and his famous firearms. "Samuel Colt (1814-1862)first patented his "Colt" revolver in 1835 and thereby redefined the architecture of handguns. This stunning book is the first to present in detail the evolution of his most famous invention and to document the unsurpassed Colt firearms collections held by the Wadsworth Atheneum. Colt designed his revolvers with an artistic sensibility--paying particular attenton to form and beauty and juxtaposing colors and finishes to heighten the visual effects. He was also one of the first American manufacturers to secure celebrity endorsements and to commission paintings by renowned artists like George Catlin to promote his arms. Colt's approach to mass production transformed industries other than his own. Six decades before Henry Ford, he introduced dedicated production lines and rigid quality control inspections to assure purchasers of the reliability of his products. Colt's standards for excellence, industrial foresight, and quest for market domination are explored in light of primary documents that reveal his constant battles to protect his patents. Essays discuss Colt's personal collection of historic firearms as well as the memorial collection of Colt-manufactured firearms, the relationship between art and commerce as they pertain to the inventor's career, and his international celebrity. Richly illustrated and beautifully produced, this volume presents the artistry of the firearms that Colt worked so diligently to perfect--as well as his promotional abilities that made a tremendous impact on American culture."
